Brazilian Jiu Jitsu–The Art of Control

What is Jiu Jitsu? Put simply, Jiu Jitsu is the art of controlling another person. It involves using leverage, gravity, and biomechanics to methodically take our training partner to increasingly compromised positions, while seizing opportunities to submit our partner with either a chokehold or a joint lock whenever presented.

Jiu Jitsu can be broken down into 4 basic steps.

Step 1

Get the fight to the ground.

People are most athletic and explosive when standing up. So we learn how to grapple our training partner down to the ground to reduce their threat level.

Step 2

Get past the legs

The legs are the strongest part of the human body, and they are used frequently in Jiu Jitsu. In order to control our partner, we must learn how to get past their legs first.

Step 3

Pin your partner

In Jiu Jitsu, a pin is any time we are past our partners legs, and we can connect chest to chest, or chest to back with them. These are the most controlling positions we can obtain.

Step 4

Submit your partner

From these pinning positions, we gain the opportunity to put our partner into submission holds. A submission is either a chokehold around the partners neck, or a joint lock on an arm or a leg. These submission holds force our partner to “tap out” meaning you have ended the match.

Benefits Of Joining A Jiu Jitsu Gym

Self Defense

Jiu Jitsu is the best martial art for self defense. Your age, gender, and athletic background doesn't matter. With Jiu Jitsu technique, you can diffuse any threatening situation using Jiu Jitsu positioning and submission holds.

Fitness

Jiu Jitsu is an extremely effective source of fitness. You will build your conditioning, strength , and flexibility with your training sessions. Particular areas of development from Jiu Jitsu training are increased core strength, grip strength, and hip dexterity.

Confidence

Training Jiu Jitsu is the ultimate confidence booster. By sharpening your body and mental toughness through time on the mats, you will walk through life with your head held higher, knowing that you have skills many people do not.

Stress Relief

Jiu Jitsu training is a form of meditation. In Jiu Jitsu, it is impossible to be thinking about day to day responsibilities that we normally have a hard time detaching from. You have to stay present and focus on the task at hand. You will leave each class feeling calmer and lighter.

Community

Jiu Jitsu gyms are one of the easiest places to make friends and connect with others. You all have a shared interest, and are all in the pursuit of bettering yourself. You’re not just joining a Jiu Jitsu gym, you’re joining a tight knit group of friends

About Brooklyn Heights Jiu Jitsu

Located just steps away from multiple train lines at 151 Montague Street, Brooklyn Heights Jiu Jitsu offers the community a rewarding experience with both Gi and No Gi Jiu Jitsu, all taught by our world class instructor.

About Our Programs

Brooklyn Heights Jiu Jitsu offers both gi and no gi jiujitsu classes. Gi classes are Monday and Wednesday at 12PM and 7PM. No Gi Classes are Tuesday and Thursday at 12PM and 7PM. We also have an open mat every Sunday from 1PM to 2:30PM.

What is the difference between Gi and Nogi? Gi Jiu Jitsu means you are training in a thick cotton grappling uniform, and emphasises getting grips on the collar, sleeve, and pants, along with a more methodical pace. No Gi Jiu Jitsu means you are training in athletic wear, such as a rash guard and shorts, and emphasizes movement and quicker pace. Training both makes for well rounded Jiu Jitsu and faster progression.

About Our Instructor

All Brooklyn Heights Jiu Jitsu classes are taught by Coach Garrett Tringale. Coach Garrett has over 16 years of Jiu Jitsu experience, and over 4 years of coaching experience. He has trained extensively with several world champion grapplers, and has medaled at a dozen different tournaments in his grappling career.

As a Coach, Garrett greatly emphasizes Jiu Jitsu fundamentals. He believes a bedrock in high level fundamentals allows students to truly thrive on the mats and launch into their own various styles of Jiu Jitsu. Coach Garrett is well read in teaching methodologies for efficient skill acquisition, and bases his class structure around these methods.

Coach Garrett believes as long as you are having fun training and give yourself permission to fail at trying new moves, you will thrive over time and make Jiu Jitsu a permanent staple of your life.

FAQs

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Started!

We know you may have questions before taking the next step—so we’ve answered the most common ones below! If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu anytime. We’re happy to help!

  • Do I need to be in shape to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

You do not need to be in shape to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Getting in shape is something that happens through training, not a prerequisite for it. Many people start BJJ specifically because they want a sustainable way to improve their fitness, mobility, and confidence without doing something repetitive or intimidating.

At Brooklyn Heights Jiu Jitsu, classes are scaled to your experience level, and you’re always encouraged to work at a pace that feels right for you. If you can show up and move, you can start.

  • What should I expect in my first BJJ class?

Your first class will be structured, welcoming, and beginner-friendly.

    Here’s what to expect:

    • A short warm-up focused on mobility and coordination
    • Clear, simple instruction on 2-3 fundamental techniques
    • Partner drilling and positional sparring at a controlled pace
    • Optional light sparring (never required!)

No one is thrown into the deep end. You’ll be guided step by step, and questions are always encouraged. The goal of your first class is to learn, feel comfortable, and leave feeling better than when you arrived.

  • How much does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu cost?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pricing varies depending on location, membership type, and coaching quality.

Most academies offer monthly memberships, and some offer discounted rates for longer commitments or founding members. At Brooklyn Heights Jiu Jitsu, we focus on transparent pricing, small class sizes, and hands-on coaching rather than packing rooms.

The best way to understand cost and value is to try a free class first and see if the environment feels right for you.

  • How long does it take to get a blue belt in BJJ?

For most people, earning a blue belt takes about 1.5 to 2.5 years of consistent training.

That timeline can vary and is based on:

    • Training frequency
    • Coaching philosophy
    • Individual learning pace
    • Attitude

More importantly, belt progression isn’t a race. The focus is on building real skill, confidence, and understanding. It’s not about checking boxes. When the fundamentals start to become second nature, the belt usually follows.

  • What is the difference between gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

The main difference between gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is what you wear and how grips are used.

    • Gi Jiu-Jitsu uses a traditional uniform and emphasizes grips on the jacket and pants. It’s methodical, technical, and great for learning control and fundamentals.
    • No-gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in athletic wear and focuses more on movement, faster pace, and body positioning. Both styles teach the same core principles. Training either (or both) builds well-rounded grappling skill.

Both styles teach the same core principles. Training either (or both) builds well-rounded grappling skill.

  • How do I choose a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy or gym?

    Choosing the right academy matters.

    Look for a gym that:

    • Is beginner-friendly and safety-focused
    • Has a clear teaching structure
    • Encourages questions and learning
    • Maintains a positive, respectful culture
    • Makes you feel comfortable from day one

The best academy is one where you feel supported, challenged, and excited to come back. Trying a free class is the best way to know if a gym is the right fit.
